Rainbow Bar

Only a Pigeon...

by Wendy Kay

Rainbow Bar

For someone who teaches people how to develop their Inner Guidance, to trust their intuition and to follow their heart…I really fell prey to the apathy of the Canadians one so often hears about!

I take the GO Train home every day from my day job in downtown Toronto. As I was standing on the platform waiting for the 3:43 p.m. train to Burlington, I noticed a pigeon sitting on the opposite platform. It was moving its head but that was all. People would walk by it and it still would not move. I began to wonder if it were ill or wounded.

An elderly couple walked onto the platform and noticed the bird. The husband started to walk towards it and the wife pulled him away (I guess she figured the bird was dangerous). After a few minutes, the husband started moving about again and he got very close to bird. The bird must have become nervous figuring he might get stepped on or hit with the man's cane and started fluttering about getting closer to the edge of the platform where the tracks were. I could see that he could not fly and that he had trouble standing. Obviously, the bird was wounded.

At this point, I should have honoured my intuition and gone downstairs to the Customer Service area and reported the injured bird, but like so many others - I did nothing. I prayed that the bird would be protected from harm but assumed that someone else would have reported the bird and it would be helped.

The next day I got up to the platform on the way home from work again and the bird was STILL on the platform. It was still injured and still the same area. Well, that was enough for me. I went down to the Customer Service department to report it. The woman at the desk was less than sympathetic and said, "Oh yes, we'll make sure someone knows." She did not ask me where the bird was or any other questions.

As I walked back up to the platform, I felt that she wasn't going to do anything about it and this time I was going to trust what I was feeling and take things one step further and contact Animal Services. When I was on the train, there was a group of people watching the bird and making comments about it but obviously nobody thought it was important enough to actually do anything about it - a sad commentary on our society. I realize this is only a pigeon but it is a living creature with no way to defend itself.

When I got home I immediately called Animal Services. The man told me that nobody had reported it yet. He took all the information and said he would send a driver around to pick up the injured bird. The next day I was very relieved to see the bird was gone.

I learned an important lesson. I try to practice what I preach (and teach) but in this case I got caught up in what I call the "downtown" mentality - rush, rush, rush. While it will take me a few days to forgive myself for doing nothing and allowing an injured creature to suffer more then it had to, I have learned that if I run into a similar situation again I will definitely trust my intuition and DO something instead of being like the thousands of apathetic people who looked at the bird and just kept walking.
