"Quick Fix" Your Inner Child

Within you exists what is known as your Inner Child. Your Inner Child is that part of you that is composed of the attitudes and beliefs you have carried forward from your childhood experiences. This means that all of the pains of childhood that have not been healed are reflected in your various adult attitudes and actions. All of the joys of childhood are also reflected in your various adult attitudes and actions. Painful childhood influences can prevent your intuition from flowing so it is beneficial for you to heal your Inner Child.

The Inner Child that is happy and knows it deserves to be loved and that it is worthy of enjoying life is the part of you that you want to become strong influence in your life. The Inner Child that is holding onto painful events that influence your adult life is the one that needs to be healed.

Healing your Inner Child can take a lot of work (but not with the "Quick Fix") because you must go back into your childhood and look at the events that caused you pain. You need to review those events that made you lose your innocent view of life. You need to review those events that made you think badly of yourself. You need to acknowledge things that still bring you emotional pain. Any feelings of abandonment, hurt, rejection, worthlessness, helplessness, poverty etc. will need to surface so that as an adult you can face these feelings (that were most likely tucked away or denied) and heal yourself of that old pain. Are you ready to do that? Well, if not...maybe you can at least start the healing process! Hey, healing "something" is a step forward as there would be one less burden to carry on your shoulders.

There is a "quick fix" that you can do to help you to let go of the negative influences of a particular event. The idea is to monitor your thinking and what you say for any particular event that keeps coming back to you - something that started in childhood but that still makes you feel denied in some way. Once you figure out what has been denied, you fulfill that need. Keep in mind, these are the things that you can fulfill easily so don't think that you can figure out that you were denied emotional support as a child and this exercise will fix it. It has to be something that can be easily fulfilled so you get rid of the feeling of being denied something that was important to the child in you.

Here are a couple of examples. When I was a child, I had a Barbie but I was the 3rd in the hand-me-down lineup so by the time I got my doll all of the Barbie clothes were used and there wasn't much left. Whenever I went to the store, I would ask my mother to buy some clothes and was always told "no". Much of the time I ended up taking little squares of material and sewing them down one side and putting them on the doll with a strip around the waist to hold it on the doll. My Barbie doll was basically the Cinderella version - dressed in rags. That's the background.

As an adult, I still kept my Barbie. She was still dressed in the rags I had made as a child. One year, I found myself teaching a beginner's sign language class because the teacher was ill and he asked if I would do it. He had come over to my home to review the course material and had seen my Barbie (she sat out on a shelf) and was horrified at her appearance. As a joke, for Christmas he went to the Salvation Army store and bought me a bunch of used Barbie clothes he found. I removed the rags and put one of the used outfits on her so she looked a bit better.

Years later when I was over at my friend Rose's house I always found myself making comments about not having Barbie clothes when I was a child. She had a daughter who had a lot of Barbie's and tons of clothes. I couldn't even fathom the thought of having more than one Barbie let alone all the accessories and clothes! The attitude of being denied clothes for my Barbie was making itself very apparent.

Rose and I were out shopping one day and found ourselves in the toy department looking at the Barbie clothes. Again, I started making comments about it and she turned to me and said, "Why don't you buy the doll something nice that you like?" I was shocked. In all of my years of complaining about the situation, it had never occurred to me that I could buy the doll an outfit! My Inner Child had that message engrained in her - no clothes for your doll - even though I made a darn good salary and could certainly afford the cost of a new Barbie outfit. You cannot imagine the feelings of joy that I experienced from dressing my Barbie in her brand new purple and silver party outfit.

Another thing that I always wanted as a child was an Easy Bake Oven. I asked for it quite a bit and was always told "no". I think I asked my mother why I was never allowed to get one and she said that it was because it cost too much money - you had to buy the cakes mixes. Now, as an adult I can bake and make cakes but I always missed not being able to make and decorate those little cakes. I never realized how often I mentioned it until one Christmas Rose bought me an Easy Bake Oven! I was about 35 years old at the time (or older) but you know getting that oven filled something inside of me. I've never mentioned it again. My Inner Child had a need filled that made her feel like she deserved something special.

These two examples are meant to show you how you can start to fix your Inner Child by filling a need of that child - something he or she never got that is quite easy to get. It doesn't solve the major lack of love issues but it is a start. So, in my case a new Barbie outfit and an Easy Bake Oven told my Inner Child that I was worthy of receiving something I truly desired.

So, start monitoring your thoughts and what you say. Is there something that you feel you needed as a child that you could fulfill easily but aren't doing it because the Inner Child is responding with the same feelings of the hurt child? ? Did you want a particular book? A paint set? A puzzle? A diary? A game? Start to satisfy your Inner Child and you will find differences in your intuition and in your attitude as an adult in how you handle situations and think of others.
