Kathryn Robertson is a young, successful professional. Currently, she is Director of Business Development and Advertising for an information based Internet company. Kathryn has always believed in life after death. As a child, Kathryn and her cousin used to put themselves into birds that were flying and see the world from great heights - a type of out-of-body experience. They just viewed it as a game and eventually grew tired of it. Although Kathryn has an interest in the metaphysical world, she is not actively developing her abilities.
When I first met Kathryn, she was just over six months pregnant. Kathryn is a petite, energetic woman (under a great deal of stress) who didn't even appear pregnant. In fact, her doctor insisted she have several tests to ensure the pregnancy was progressing normally and there were no problems with the baby or herself. All tests came out negative - baby and mother were healthy. She knew from her tests that the baby was a girl.
Two months before her due date, Kathryn went into early labour. On Tuesday August 1, 2000, Kathryn thought she was having a colitis attack but decided to visit her doctor because she had started to bleed. When her doctor finally checked her, Kathryn had already started to dilate (go into active labour). They rushed her into the Maternity intensive care unit and started to pump her full of medication to try to slow down or stop the labour. The baby's lungs were not yet fully matured.
Although there was a 98% chance of the baby being fine, it would have been much safer if she had gone to term.
As much as they tried to stop the labour, baby Riannon was determined to be born. Over the course of several days, Kathryn dilated further and her doctor felt the baby would be born by the weekend. Kathryn's dream of having her baby delivered in a cozy room was to be replaced by the four white walls of a surgery room. This was necessary as the Specialists knew they would have to resuscitate the baby.
Kathryn was fully dilated to 10 centimeters and it was time to push. She was in the operating room when suddenly her blood pressure dropped drastically and her heart stopped beating. Kathryn didn't remember leaving her body but just remembered finding herself floating above her body, looking down at herself on the operating table.
When asked what she saw, Kathryn said,
"I saw all the activity going on with my body and the entire room including the clock. I looked across from me and saw my daughter who appeared to be somewhere between the ages of 8 and 10 [years old]. She was smiling and waving at me.
There was also very bright white light coming from above and behind me. When I turned to look at it I saw changing shapes and patterns and felt love and warmth and peace. She [Riannon] had light olive coloured skin (well, more towards fair but darker than me - olive toned is more accurate). She had dark chestnut coloured hair with a wave to it. Blue eyes, my smile, her father's eye shape and chin, my lips and long fingers.
I felt peaceful, happy, surrounded by more love than seems humanly possible. I don't remember "hearing" anyone, but I do remember "feeling" a presence that was my former partner's grandmother, and she was releasing me from a deathbed promise I had made. I never even thought about going back in my body - it just never crossed my mind."
The doctors however had every intention of ensuring they did not lose their patient. They took appropriate measures and started her heart beating again. Kathryn remarked, "I don't remember feeling myself go back into my body, I just remember suddenly being there after my daughter finished waving to me. I remember going back to a lot of pain - it was like getting a "jolt"." On Saturday August 5, 2000 @ 8:30 p.m. 3 lbs. 12 oz. Riannon Serena Robertson Overs was born.
This event changed Kathryn's life. As a result of her experience, she is no longer afraid of death. She commented, "My biggest fear my entire life was dying in childbirth. Well, I did and I'm no longer afraid of what's there when we die or death itself. This lack of fear has translated to a lot of other areas as well."
Kathryn Robertson was clinically dead for approximately one minute. Kathryn described the time of being "dead" as, "it felt like both a long time (at least an hour) but also a brief second - both simultaneously, it was weird!!".
We are all very glad that Kathryn and baby Riannon are doing fine. Kathryn is back at work (between visits to her daughter) until she can take Riannon home from the hospital and start her maternity leave. Riannon has been moved out of intensive care into a less critical ward where she is gaining weight and doing very well.
Update: On September 9, 2000 Riannon was released from the hospital.
